Hello;

I will be looking into testing wireless lan sniffer programs on an IPAQ5450

I see that some programs do not support the onboard wireless card.

I'm primarily looking at using MiniStumbler - what cards work best with it?
Got any model numbers other than what is on the site:

a.. Lucent Technologies WaveLAN/IEEE (Agere ORiNOCO)
b.. Compaq WL110
What cards are best for Airmagnet and PDASniffer programs?

Also; is there any other programs out there that I could use?

Thanks!

Steer clear of the Compaq card, there have been some issues with it going to
sleep after a random period of time. The Orinoco card is the original and
best for use with Netstumbler at the moment, either Gold or Silver flavour.
There is an update to Ministumbler expected in the near future that will add
support for other cards, hopefully including Cisco Aironet cards, which
without a doubt are the most capable cards with regard to sniffing &
stumbling available, only time will tell if the new Ministumbler will
support them though, another app called pocketwarrior -
www.pocketwarrior.org does now though.

The Orinoco/Lucent cards are also supported by AiroPeek (or is it the
other way around?).

Never had a problem with my Compaq cards.

This refers to Compaq WL110 cards, the Lucent based cards that are the only
Compaq cards recognised by MINIstumbler. Other Compaq cards (WL100 & Ipaq)
use the Intersil Prism chipset. There are a number of different WL110's as
well, all manufactured at different times, indicated by different "Batch
Numbers" some do indeed behave perfectly others don't. I had a WL110, it was
one that went to sleep, so I bought an Orinoco. For more info:-

Most likely a firmware issue?

I use 3 WL110's all bought over different time span, no problems with
any. Guess I was just lucky then.

David.

Thanks for the info - much appreciated! I had to update the ROM on my 5450,
but PocketWarrior now works a treat

Just got to try and convince someone to spend a lot of cash on AirMagnet or
SnifferPDA, unless there are cheaper alternatives - I do want to purchase
something of use!
