Someone told me recently that disconnecting the bell wire may improve
broadband speed. Is this correct and, if so what should I do please?

Thanks.

Yes, it can, especially on marginal lines and where you have extensions
each with it's own filter.
You just disconnect the wire(s) connected to terminal #3 at each socket.

Is it me, or is there something decidedly odd about this image

It looks as though this socket has been used on a PABX installation at
some time, which uses all 6 wires for the extra signalling required in
that application. It also looks as though there used to be two cables
terminated in the socket.

Or, if originally terminated to BT spec, you would use 6-wire cable
and terminate all of them - whether or not they were needed. This
meant that if you got a faulty pair then you could use the green pair
to replace the blue / orange pair instead of running a new cable. If
you cut the green pair off short, then if you got a faulty pair you
were stuffed.
