Belking USB wireless only for frontmost user

Hi All,

Weird problem. After my computer died and took my pci wireless card
with it I decided to buy a little Belkin Wireless G USB Network
Adapter (that's what they call it). Installed the drivers from the CD,
plugged in the dongle when it said to, everything worked fine.

Until I switched user, that is.

Every time I switch users (or we, I should say, my gf has her own
account) it takes a couple of seconds while the other user's
connection drops and the currently active user's connection
establishes.

Which means that I can't have downloads/torrents/whatever running in
the background while another user does other things.

Is this some weird setting that I have to switch on somewhere, or is
this just a feature of this kind of equipment and I'm stuck with it?

Chris

Card-specific software such as that provided with Belkin and Netgear cards,
is run per-user so i) the PC won't be connected until a user logs on; ii) if
a user switches to another, the connection will drop and then be
re-established under the new user's "ownership".

However, if you disable that software and let the Windows Zero Config
service handle the establishing of the connection, the connection will exist
even before a user has logged on and (I think) will remain connected as you
switch from one user to the other.

In the card software, look for an option to let Windows handle the
connection (I've seen this when I was installing a Belkin card the other day
but I can't remeber exactly which screen it's on) and then right-click on
the wireless icon (com0puter screen with two arcs beside it) and scan for
networks. Highlight the correct one, press connect and enter the encryption
key - twice.

Hmmm, I've set the option to let windows handle the wireless
connection (although I couldn't explicitly find the words or name
'zero config' anywhere), but no luck. I'll try again when I get home
tonight, but I'm sure I've done that already...

Belkin is not the best (and normally good for a quick condemn).
But, your problems may lay with
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
KeepRasConnections=1
(registry)
- I know, I'm brilliant.
