Hi all,

I installed a wireless network using A Belking 54g gateway/ router and a
Belkin 54g PCI card in my Laptop. The specs are talking about a range of
1800 feet (555 meters) and more.
The max distance I get is about 12 meters (with 3 walls in between), inside
the house. Then I get at the backdoor and as soon as I get outside ( another
wall), I loos contact.
I tried changing the operating channel, no use.

Anybody having the same router so we can share experience ? Maybe somebody
can give me a tip to increase the distance ?

thanks in advance,
Francis

I think that range only exists on Hovsgol Lake in Mongolia in the dead of
winter. 20 meters indoors is about right for 802.11b.

If your router is at one end of your building, you might try some simple
reflectors for free. I like the EZ-10.

How did you get a PCI card in your Laptop ? Do you mean a PCMCIA
Card??
If so, I have the same thing, and may be able to help...

You said "54g" right ? Which means that your setup is operating on
802.11G, and as far as know whilst they are supposedly about the same
range, you do get slightly greater preformance with 'G' as opposed to
'B.' > So you might well get greater distance than this.

My Belkin PCMCIA card (and I am gussessing, most if not all Belkin 54g
products) have settings which you can configure which may give you
better output. I am currently getting fantastic rates and reception
through 3 solid brick walls. Indeed, my new wireless system is
exceeding all of my expectations! (only diff is I am using a linksys,
as opposed to a Belkin router - But surely it can't make that much
difference ?!?)

Anyway, if you double click the Wireless network icon on the task bar
(NOT the little green/red Belkin screen - It should look like two
computers - Or if you don't have one there then, START > SETTINGS >
CONTROL PANEL
>NETWORK CONNECTIONS) then click PROPERTIES > GENERAL TAB (You should

see the "Belkin Wireless 54Mbps Notebook Adapter" (or whatever)
listed.
Click CONFIGURE and click on the ADVANCED tab. Check the PROPERITY
list and make sure POWER OUTPUT is set at 100%, then check IBBS
54g(tm) MODE on the property list and check the value (list on
right-hand side)is set to 54G HIGHEST PERFORMANCE.

Give that a go and see does it help - Hope it does!

Also, you will prob have to check that the router is also set to top
performance!

Hey Freudster,

thanks a lot for the tip. This realy did it. I am sitting outside in the
garden typing this message. The signal is now strong enough. I don't
understand whu this is not the default setting. I will check my router to
see if I can find a simular setting.

anyway, thanks a lot,

Francis
