Just bought a belikn wireless networking kit, this is 802.11g - up to 54Mbs

After connecting these cards into my PC (WinXP Pro) & Laptop (Winxp Home), I
just transferred a 238mb file in 20min, I wouldn't expect to get the
theoretical maximum 54Mbs, but surely this is way to slow.

Any advice?

My broadband connection works well through the network cards though,

I took my ages to configure and i could have made a mistake, but there is NO
support for these devices and no FAQ at the Belkin site?
..............
Please excuse me if I shouldn't have posted here as well as,
comp.os.ms-windows-networking

There was a recent performance test in PC World in the UK - they tried
various routers and APs with embedded 802.11g, and got around 15 Mbps file
transfer speeds.

i make your rate to be 1.5 Mbps - so i think there is something wrong.

try testing on ethernet ports so you have a baseline if you can. That way
you can get some idea of whether it is the windows file sharing or the
wireless.

try a transfer in the opposite direction, and /or sharing from a different
PC, or using a simpler protocol such as FTP.

if you buy cheap kit that is supposed to be "idiot proof" then the
manufacturer support side is one place they can cut down their overheads - i
am not agreeing that they should....

I have a win xp pro desktop wired to a Belkin F5D7230-4 54G wireless
router. Also have a win98se laptop using the Belkin PC 54G Card (about
10-15 feet away from the router). I have done large large file
transfers. Here's what I found:

1. Tried to transfer a large folder (about 500MB). Transfer rate was
slow - about .5 to .7 MB/s. The folder was made up of over 11000 text
files and thus incurred alot of overhead.

2. I then tried a zipped file (winzip) of a larger folder (many text
files) which was also around 500MB. The transfer rate was now around 2.2
MB/s (about 17Mb/s).

So, the question is, was your file a single file (possibly compressed)
or was it a large number of files in a folder? Also, real life max
transfer rates are around 40% of the 54Mb/s. Other things to try are
(under Channel and SSID):

a. Set router to 54G only
b. Turbo Mode ON
c. Protection Mode OFF
d. 2.4 GHZ phones can cause interference, as well as microwaves. You may
want to try another channel (I use channel 1)

Hope this helps,
Harvey

Is this the kit from PC World, if so you will find it defaults to 11mb
and if you have turned on Windows briding grinds down to 1mb

The solution is to remove all reference to Windows brieding and in the
properties for both cards lock them to 54g - I posted some
instructions on the ebuyer site last night on how to do this, might
take another few hours to appear.#

Once you get this kit up and working it is fairly fast, I also picked
up the router, managed to place it in the centre of the house and have
all bar one pc working close to 54mb, it takes 8minutes to transfer a
complete cd image or around 700mb
