Belkin wireless network card problem

Im new here, and Im sure the problem has been asked before, but I'll put it
forward again.

I have two computers, one Desktop, the other a laptop. The Desktop is
running win ME and has a Belkin WiFi PCi card in it, aswell as cable
internet. The Laptop is running XP and has A PCMICA(?) Belikin Card init
(the sister to the desktop version).

I have both running fine on adhoc mode, but there is are problems.
1) When I reboot the decktop, it takes ages to reconnect the two computers.
When the laptop is rebooted, things are fine
2) Quite often the laptop looses "sight" of the Desktop, and the MAC
addresses don't always match when they are on the same channels.

are there any work around to fix this problem, and or should I upgrade to a
access point, in which case, should I either upgrade to one where I can plug
my cable modem into directly, so I can have one computer turned off and the
other one can still surf the net, Or do I have to have the access point
connected to the desktop. Also, will this make the network more stable, if
not 100% stable?

I hate pissfarting around just to get the internet back up on the laptop.

Any help will do.
Thanks
Michael

This may help on the initial start up and finding the wireless network

So basically, your saying that the problem isn't in the PC running windows
ME that takes ages to find the network, but rather in the laptop running
windows XP that has no problem at all?

Apologies, no if the laptop has no problems (which I had missed) then
patching XP on the laptop won't make any difference.

I'll leave others to comment on the ME PC
