Hi

New member and not very savvy 'bout routers.

My existing belkin router was replaced by belkin when the power supply
melted. However they did not have UK models so they sent me a french
one. I'm in the UK with BT broadband.

Every time I try & connect, I get "No Connection". I've spent 1 hour on
the phone to the helpdesk. I've removed all network hardware &
re-installed, and I even did a Norton Ghost recovery to get back a
clean system. None of these work.

I get a physical connection, as I see the correct speed showing on my
Belkin Home page, and this goes to zero when I remove the connection to
the ADSL filter. IPCONFIG shows my PC is talking to the router. but no
external pings work.

Anyone got any suggestions? I suspect either my router is faulty or the
french/uk situatiuon is causing a problem.

Thanks

Sounds like a possible DNS problem. Presumably you have a wired connection
between the PC and router? How does the PC get an IP address - are you using
the router as a DHCP server, or are you using fixed IP addresses?

It sounds as if you can access the router's status page/setup page by
pointing your browser at the router's IP address. Does this - and any status
lights on the router - show that you are connected to the internet - and
actually logged on to your ISP account, not just synched?

Can you ping the router? You say you can't ping anything external - so
presumably "ping www.bbc.co.uk" doesn't work? But what happens if you ping
its IP address - ping 212.58.224.116 ?

Can you ping your ISP's DNS server?

Just in case the router is synching with the line but not logging into your
account, check:
* that it is set up for PPPoA *not* PPPoE
* that the VPI and VCI settings are correct (probably 0 and 38) and
* that your user account details and password have been entered correctly

Thanks for the repsonse.

Yes I am wired to the main PC. I use BT Yahoo Broadband, so the IP
address is not fixed, but allocated by the server.

I have no problem accessing the routers status page. According to the
status page, my ADSL status is "Connected", and my data Rate is 2272Kb.
The ADSL light on my router is also lit permanently, but teh "Internet"
light on my router does not even flash when I try to actually connect.

I can ping the router, and as you guessed, a ping to www.bbc.co.uk does
not work either. I've just tried ping it using the numerical values you
suggested and it does not work either, reporting unreachable.

I'm not sure how I find the address for the BT server. I tried their
help file, and didn't find it, but maybe I searched for the wrong
thing.

I am set up for PPPoA, and the VPI VCI settingfs are 0,38.

Password etc are also correct.

Thanks

Colin

I was actually asking about your PC's LAN IP address, not your router's WAN
IP address!

It seems pretty clear that the router is synching with the line 2Mbps, but
it's not actually logging on to your account.

When you're talking to its setup menu, is there an option to 'Connect now'
or somesuch? What happens when you click it?

AAH!!! Now I'm struggling a bit, as this is starting to get out of my
depth. I believe I am on a fixed IP for the PC of 192.168.2.2, but I
have not set it, I assume it is being set by the router software.

Yes there is a connect button, and when I click it nothing happens. I
checked by clearing the security log, then hitting "Connect", and the
log remained blank ( did a refresh as well just in case). In fact there
is an ADSL status window in the belkin page, and it already shows
connected. So in fact I did test this by using disconnect, clering the
log file and then pressing connect. This time I did get an entry in the
log file, but now, I can't remember what it was. I'm getting soft in
the head now.

But in any event, I can't now check it as I have returned the router to
Belkin, for a replacement to be issued.

So Thanks for the help, but I can't now test any more, so unless I have
the same problem with the new machine, I hope the problem will be
solved shortly.

Thanks again for your help Tim

Colin

OK, a bit of education . .

Your router is (or should be!) providing a bridge between the Wide Area
Network (WAN - internet) and your Local Area Network (LAN). It will have
*two* IP addresses - one for the WAN, allocated (dynamically in your case)
by your ISP, and one for the LAN, allocated by you (or using its factory
default). The network card in your PC has to have a LAN IP address, in the
same range as the router's LAN address. This can be set manually by you - or
can be allocated automatically by the router if its DHCP server
functionality is enabled (which it will be be default). It sounds as if
you've taken the automatic route - using the router's default address of
192.169.2.1 and allowing it to allocate 192.169.2.2 to your PC. Nothing
wrong with that.

Good luck with your new router!

Thanks Tim

I really struggle with network issues. I build my own PC's, maintain &
repair friends ones, even set up tehir routers, but when something goes
wrong, I struggle cos I dont understand anything beyond the basics.

I've got another one I'm setting up at the moment, whuch is a SAfecom
router for a friend. Took hours to configure as the "manual!!!!!" was
rubbish. Once I got it going, it kept losing the network connection (to
the wired & wireless PC). I'm assuming its a mobile phone that is
interfering, (tried all the different wireless channels but no luck)
and I am just about to put it onto my network to see if it works fine
here.

But it takes time as I don't understand what I'm doing. I spent 6 hours
on Friday trying to set up my own router, assuming I was doing someting
wrong. ON Saturday I spent an hour on the phone to India with the
helpline, they couldn't do anything etc

Ah well I'm learing all the time.

Thanks again

Colin
