Belkin pre-n router/modem problems

A couple of weeks ago I was trying to add another laptop to out system but
couldn't because that MAC filtering setting in the router security would let
me access the settings.

Rebooting the router made no difference and in the end I had to do a hard
reset and manually restore the settings (improting saved settings just
reproduced the same fault).

Since then though the wireless connection has been really flaky. The
laptops keep losing connection and have to keep re-finding the router. Our
desktop on a wired connection seems fine so I don't think there's anything
wrong with the modem side of things, just the wireless connection.

Signal strength has always been excellent and to be honest, the router
hasn't just started losing connection with the laptops, it just seems to
have got worse since the hard reset.

I'm wondering if I haven't messed up a setting or whether out router isn't
just on its way out.

I've just had a look at the security log with is pretty doubledutch to me
but seem to use the word "intrusion" a lot which sounds worrying. At
present I have WPA encryption enabled but no MAC filtering on the wireless
side of things.

Any suggestions?

Tim (see part of log below)

Look under Advanced -> WAN Setup and check "Disable port scan and DOS
protection" - These routers seem to think that any repeated attempt to
connect is a virus until you check that.

Also check under Setup -> Basic Settings and make sure that idle timeout is
0

Not an option on my router that I can find.

The nearest I can find is:

Firewall > WAN Ping Blocking

ADVANCE FEATURE! You can configure the Router not to respond to an ICMP Ping
(ping to WAN port). Block ICMP Ping (selected).

Not sure I wan't to diable that.

I would disable it (i.e. allow ICMP Ping[sic]).

Oops! Of course I meant disable.

That said, woudn't a problem with an oversensitive ping detector (or what
ever it is) result in an interuption of connect to ISP rather than loss of
connection between router & wirelessly connected laptops? As I mentioned
before, my wired connections are fine.

Tim
