Belkin F5D7011uk wont access the internet

I have a working wifi network.
PC on 98SE hard wired to edimax wifi router
wifi enabled lap top on XP
I have set up wep on the router and the network above works ok with the
router set up as an AP

However i have just installed a Belkin PCMCIA F5D7011uk into an old laptop
running Windows 98 (not SE)
It has installed OK it appears to see the Wireless network and i have set
the wep codes and double checked them to ensure they are correct. i have
been unable to log on to the internet.
I cannot ping the router. Will the 98SE drivers work on the 98 laptop? they
appear to. The utility for checking the installation does not show any
faults. The tcpip settings are set to obtain an IP adress from the routers
DHCP server

any thing i have missed? comments please would be very helpful.
