I have just bought the Belkin ADSL Router with Wireless,
there is a review here

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/labs/labs_sto...headline=Wirel

Now, my problem is that sometimes I can't browse websites, but
if I enter the ip of the site instead of the name then it works. Switching
off and on usually solves the problem, but still, it's annoying

Hi there I have the same Router and the same problem, but only when I first
try to connect. The data light remains off and the browser returns a website
not found message.
I find the only way to connect easily is to use Msn messenger to make the
Router respond.
I like the IP idea though I could use that on my home page and hopefully
connect easily.
I have two wireless and one wired connection on this Router.

yes, it doesn't loose connection or anything, it simply doesn't connect
properly, i.e. ip's work, host names don't.

If it responds to IP addresses but not text-based URLs, it means that it's
not finding your ISP's DNS servers. [The first thing which happens when you
type in a URL is that a request is sent to the DNS server to convert this to
a numeric IP address].

In the router config menu, is there a place where you can enter the primary
and secondary DNS server addresses explicitly? If there is, do so. [You
should find the DNS server addresses in the setup documentation supplied by
your ISP].

You may also be able to enter the DNS server addresses directly into each
PC - as part of the TCP/IP settings for the ethernet port.

p.s.
Just in case this is important, my isp is tiscali home user
and my internet settings are PPPoA and all the rest are
default values, I.e. the only thing I need to enter when
I set up is the user/pass, the PPPoA, and accept all other
values.

This problem is intermittent, i.e. some mornings I will switch
everything on, and it will work, other mornings, no. I checked
it with my other usb adsl modem, i.e. disconnected the router
from the phone line, connected to usb modem, and straight
away it starts to work, then back to the router, and the router
starts to work as well. It's as if the usb modem "clears" the
blockage.

OK, but as per my previous post, it can't do any harm to enter DNS addresses
explicitly - even though you're supposed not to need to - and it might just
help.

leave the router on ?

what DNS servers are the computers being allocated, ipconfig /all from
a command prompt or look at properties/status of the network
connection.

The USB modem will use DNS servers allocated to it on logging in, the
ruter may have them set manually or may cock up getting them. You can
manually enter your ISPs DNS server IP addresses into each PC to avoid
router glitches.

Workarounds are all well and good, still, I can't hide my disappointment of
a bug of such magnitude and visibility. I also have a sneaky
feeling that this is something they can't fix with software updates. Very
disappointing indeed.
