Belkin ADSL Modem/Router Crashes on large transfers

I haven't seen this problem mentioned here before, but suspect we are not
the only ones suffering it.

We have a Belkin F5D7630uk4A device, operating in 54g mode, with 4 computers
(2 laptops and 2 desktops) all connected via Belkin wireless cards (F5D7000
on the desktops and F5D7010uk on the laptops). If we try to transfer a file
larger than about 10Mb on the local network (from one of these 4 computers
to another) the router almost invariably hangs up. The wireless connection
drops on all the connected computers and stays down until we reset the
router by pressing the button in the back. This also happens (but less
often) when downloading from the Internet.

Carrying out almost ANY network operation on my newer laptop while the
desktop is also connected to the Internet seems to cause the crash. On the
evening we installed it and had to copy a lot of files across, the router
was literally crashing every five minutes.

I have installed the firmware update for the router
(beldsl_fw-v_a_1_04_03uk.bin) and have also put a driver update from
Belkin's site on both laptops. This has sorted out one or two other things
but has done nothing to reduce the frequency of these crashes.

Looking at the advanced settings in Windows XP (all these PCs have Service
Pack 1), I notice that the desktop cards have an extra setting (XPress
Technology) not on the laptop. I have disabled this in case of a conflict,
but don't know yet if this has helped.

I e-mailed Belkin support two days ago and haven't even had an
acknowledgement. I suppose they're swamped with this type of query, since
their on line "Knowledge Base" seems to have nothing in it that would let
users sort out this kind of problem themselves. It's very frustrating.

Has anyone any suggestions?

Thanks for any help.

BUGGER I have just bought one and should be switched on to ADSL soon. I hope
they resolve the problem soon.

This used to happen on my Win95/98SE mixed network. One cause was
overheating in the network switch, simply moving it to increase air
circulation fixed the problem. My F5D7630UK4 (don't know how different
the A version is) has had no obvious problems even when editing video
across the network, of course its not sitting on top of a TV like the
switch was!

Also: don't rule out Windoze problems. My WinXP box occasionally falls
off the network after disagreeing with the routers DHCP server.

Fairly well known problem, usually with P2P downloads, the routing tables
can't cope.
You may need a better / office quality router e.g. Draytek Vigor 2600.

Martin

Really? I've not noticed problems simultaneously running 2 Bittorrents,
Mozilla, mail&news client and VNC to my TV capture PC.

Either the A version is crippled or that's not the problem.

A couple of things to try are:

1. if you are using the European drivers for the Belkin cards, try the North
American ones instead - they are a lot newer and I found them more stable.
The functionallity on them is virtually identical as well.

2. Also if you only have no 802.11b devices you can set all your equipment
to 54G only

For the desktop/laptop cards, you change the device managersettings to
"54g-Performance" under IBSS 54g mode. The router will have its own option
somewhere for the same thing

If none of this helps, instead of e- mailing Belkin - try their free tech
support line on 00800 2 2355460 (international freephone = 00800) instead

It won't be the problem - the Belkin F5D7630uk4A is just the full model
number

AFAIK the uk4 is a wireless router/switch, the uk4a is a wireless
router/switch/ADSL modem. I assume they have similar but not identical
firmware.

The biggest reported bug on the F5D7360-4 is problems flashing new
firmware, might be worth reflashing several times to be sure.

I also assume that if other people were having this problem they would
have commented by now, suggesting its a faulty router rather than a
firmware problem.

Dear John

You are not the only ones....

We have had exactly the same problems, a combination of freezing,
overheating and crashing. Unfortunately we did not have the time to
go back to the dealer and swap the unit, we had to install a separate
modem and wireless router to keep the site running.

The good news is we got a full refund from the dealer later on and we
have discovered the USR kit. The US Robotics 11g kit works superbly
for us, and has a faster throughput.

For the record we have also had to return a fault Belkin USB switch
and a wonky Belkin 5 port router.

No more Belkin for us...

I was under the impression that the F5D7230uk4 was the wireless
router/switch version with the F5D7630uk4A being the one is the ADSL modem
integrated i.e. actually a different model number as well.
