Belkin 54g access point

I can't connect to it until I power it off and then back on If no
computer is connected to the Belkin for some time (hours or days).
When attached it usually has very good signal strength. This happens
even if my laptop is only 2 feet away. Once I make a connection it is
good for as long as my laptop is powered up and pretty much anywhere
in the house.

When failing to connect, I see the lights on the device blink
everytime I click on the refresh button in my laptop so I know it is
trying. I can access the Belkin's internal web page when it fails
also.

I have the broadcast ID turned off, MAC address and 128bit encryption
turned on.

I'd like to find some method to wake it up besides physically power
cycle the thing. I returned the first one I got and exchanged it
thinking it was defective. Now I'm wondering if this is normal for
this unit.

Any help is appreciated.

Dave

In hopes this helps anyone else with the same problem - here is what I
found out.

First, this was the Belkin F5D7130 Access Point. But according to the
devices internal web page, it was using the firmware from Belkins 54G
Router F5D7230-4 which is a different device. The Firmware Update
link in the internal web page said the firmware was up to date (no new
firmware). After manually checking the site I discovered there was a
newer version. http://web.belkin.com/support/downlo...0&lang=1&mode=
I updated the firmware and now it seems to be connecting every time.

Who would guess the device would come from the factory using firmware
from a different device?

I'm quite sure that those devices are exactly the same, but in the access
points, some stuff is "disabled" (something like the 486SX and 486DX
difference)

Belkin's update check seems to be very broken. My 7230-4 keeps showing
me the US updates (not much use on a UK router) or 'no update available'
when there is an update. The auto-update feature has shown no sign of
working at all.

Why is a US update no use on a UK router? Here in Belgium I use the US 3.00
firmware, which is still unavailable for other regions. Ok, I lose 2 channel
possibilities, but who cares about that... does anyone know if there is a
difference in legal transmission power on the 2.4GHz band between US and
europe?
