BEFW11S4 wireless problems when no WAN connection

Hi all,
I just bought a second-hand BEFW11S4 v1.
If I use it with no WAN connection (i.e. only LAN + wireless), the
wireless connection does not work correctly:
-my Wi-Fi laptop connects to the wireless network;
-it gets a DHCP address from the router;
-BUT it is not able to access http://192.168.1.1 (the router itself).

On the other hand:
-if I plug my laptop to the cable LAN, I can access
http://192.168.1.1.
-if I plug the router to the WAN, wireless works ok.

Basically, I am not able to use the router as a simple access point or
as a cable<->wireless switch.

This looks like a firmware bug to me - has anyone seen a similar
problem?

Well, if you're not able to get a valid IP from the router, then you
won't be able to access the router's admin page or got to the Internet
either. That will be indicated by the computer getting an IP that starts
with 169.xxx. You should try a wire connection to see if you get the
169.xxx, by entering IPConfig /all at the command prompt. And what O/S is
this?

Discussed this month in this newsgroup.

It looks like you need to assign a fixed IP address to the WAN port, so
that it isn't constantly looking for a DHCP server on the WAN side.

I get revs confused, but there is also an option on some versions of the
firmware to set the router as a router instead of a gateway. You would
then use the WAN port to connect to your upstream network. Advanced Tab -
Dynamic Routing - Router
