BB log in probs

I am on Demon BB & have a Speedtouch 330 USB modem. My problem is
that quite often when I try to logon I get an error "no dialling tone"
and can only logon after rebooting the machine. Sometimes I need to
reboot more than once.

My OS is win 98SE and I wonder if anyone else has had this problem and
can point me to a solution. Demon helpdesk is not very helpful,
unfortunately.

On the assumption that the computer's of a similar vintage to the
operating system, USB's not likely to be hugely reliable whatever OS you
run, but 98SE isn't helping. If you want a one-shot solution, it's an
ethernet card and a router.

You could try unplugging the USB modem for a couple of minutes & then
plugging it back in, wait for it to be loaded back on & then try...

Even better would be to bin the USB modem & get a router, but you may not
want to go that far...

Sounds like the typical USB problem (the Speedtouch 330`s are renowned
for it) - as others have suggested a router would get around all that
crap for you :-)

I haven`t looked back since I got mine ~14 months ago, after a couple of
months of constant aggravation after first getting broadband.

Having never had the misfortune of having a USB modem I'm going off my
limited knowledge of the things but aren't they installed as dialup
connections? Can't you untick the box that says 'Check for dial tone
before dialling' in the modem properties, or am I in completely the
wrong area?

yes. There's probably no suitable error message available and while
the modem is another type of modem on the phone line, the comparison
and diagnostics are less than ideal. Indeed, perhaps more confusing
that the error is reported with an analogue modem's error message.

I always recommend a router now, having used USB for just 2-3 months.

Ok, I'll leave the USB problems alone then!

Yes, most definitely the best solution all round. I would never use a
USB modem for any reason other than, erm,.... well, never actully.
