Hi there,

I have been delving into the wide world of BB, and found that the only
service in my area actually caps download speeds to 512mbps during the day
and then reverts to your main package (2mbps) evenings and weekends. Is this
a normal occurance?

This is waht they say:

There are no monthly usage restrictions on HomeSurf options
Off-peak time is 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. Mon-Fri and all weekend
Peak time is 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Thanks

Which ISP ? (presumably installing prior to BT upgrading local exchanges)

It isn't the most common type of supply, but has been offered in the past
by Bulldog (a friend has the same style 500 daytime, 2000 off-peak) a/c.
If it is anything like the Bulldog account, you would probably find it's
a bit cheaper than any other 2000 kbps services as they're able to give
business users the higher daytime speed and share more flexibly for home
users to get higher speeds out of hours...

I've not known any others offering quite this deal. Eclipse does have a
'flex' account which can have the speed boosted for a small hourly fee,
but isn't limited to off-peak hours, AFAIK. Peter Morgan.

that'll be http://www.trilogytelecom.co.uk/ I take it

No, this is not standard practice. Its another world - LLU Broadband
subsidised by the taxpayer. Enjoy !

All of their Homesurf products are restricted during peak hours to
512k, their HomeLite is not restricted in speed but has a 2 GB/month
cap. No diea what happens after 2 GB - stops working? pay more? slows
to 64k? get a snotty email?

Clearly they haven't got a massive amount of backhaul serving these
areas and need to limit consumption of bandwidth.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the response and yes it is trilogy!

Until June 2005 they are currently the only provider in our area but I don't
think their packages are too bad. I get a 2mbps connection for arond £30pm
(or is that a lot?) and unlimited bandwidth. They even offer various
contention ratios and up to 4mbps for around £50.00pm.

As a matter of interest what does LLU and backhaul mean? I didn't realise
it was subsidised.

I go live this Weds

Thanks

the fees aren't bad, but as you point out its not a 2M connection all
the time.

Local Loop Unbundling - how Trilogy get to use BT's wires to connect
you up. Backhaul - connection of Trilogy's local kit to the rest of
the planet

" FREE activation worth £120 with broadband voucher" - did you get one
of these - that's from South Cambridgeshire District Council I think
so maybe not your area.

for "Trilogy EEDA"

A friend is paying Bulldog 25 quid (on an account no longer being
offered but 30 doesn't sound bad, when some 1000 kbps are 29.99 !

I don't use my PrimeTime connection during the day any longer so can't test
this but since Bulldog have stopped offering these, I think(according to
various reports) they have virtually given up on capping during the day (as
it was causing them some problems) - hence your friend (and I) may well be
getting 2MB all the time....

Sunil

They seem to be confused about what SDSL means - advertising their
SDSL 4000 service as 4Mbps downstream and 256kbps upstream. Is that not
the definition of ADSL? :-) What part "symmetric" do they not understand?

Zane.
