Basic networking Not working?

Hello,

I am trying to figure out why my server 2003 machine will not allow any
mapped drives or file shares unless I turn off the firewall? File and Print
sharing is checked and so is Client for microsoft networks. Only one nic.

This is the oddest thing? Simple networking which I have done thousands of
times before but this is a total mystery here? Tried piniging I can ping it
with ICMP enabled
is there something I am forgetting or just don't know? Very possible on the
latter =)

Any suggestions?
Thank you
Joe

You need to open ports or services on the firewall to allow file sharing:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;317530

If you are running SP1, you may need to configure the scope as well:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../overview.mspx

If your Windows Server 2003 machine is a domain controller, you will want to
open additional ports:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;832017

Hello Doug,

I have this server on a network behind a router all machines are behind the
router so ICF seems to not com into play? or does It? I went to the ports in
the firewall and opened up TCP 137
445
UDP
138
139

If I remeber correctly ow I can share. Is this ok?

Thank you very much
Joe

Get rid of the personal firewall (ICF) running on the box. It is already
protected by the Internet Firewall.

I would open UDP/TCP 135-139 and UDP/TCP 445:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;298804

But Phillip is right, probably you do not want to run this firewall on a LAN
connection. The SP1 firewall gives you more granular control, but it will
be a pain if you make this server a domain controller.

Yes I can see your point very clearly I am behind a ProSafe Netgear VPN
Hardware Firewall.

So Ican remove the Personal Firewall? Ok good! By the way I tried SP1 and it
was a complete disaster I had to remove it.

Thank you Phillip

Hello Doug,

Thanks for all the great help! Ilooked for something like these KB's you
gave me but couldn't find them. I printed eahc and put them into my library.

I have taken up your idea UDP/TCP ports

Thank you again
Joe

Good. I refuse to install it. I always wait to see what disasters other have
with SPs before I apply them. SP1 was a disaster from the fisrt day it was
released. It's too bad,..I do know for a fact that they did put a lot of
time and effort into it, but somehow it is still a mess (IMO).
