Hi,

Have any broadband suppliers ever gone bankrupt and if so what happened to
their customers?

Cheers,
Bob

No large ones that I can remember, but presumably they would just sell their
customer base to another equivalent service.

Breathe Pro services were managed on their behalf by Plus.Net, along
with a number of other brandings from some ill-fated ISP. Plus.Net
warned it would "pull the plug" in about a week, but came up with a
solution and kept users from being without service and unable to get
an alternative (no cease, need for delay before checker would accept
a line, and so on). Whole thing took place in spring of 2003, from
memory, but it might be a different matter to 'migrate' from an ISP
with no staff present to give the Migration Access Code to the user.

I suppose making a noise with ADSLguide, uk-bug, The Register, and
so on might get the attention of BT Wholesale and/or some ISPs who
might then be prodded into doing a prompt transfer for end-users
(since the end user wants service and BTW would benefit from not
having any possible drift to cable services, if available). PGM

If it happened in future, the chances are Ofcom would have a quiet word with
someone (last resort: BT) and "suggest" they takeover the customer base to
ensure the end users suffer minimal problems.

Of course, if the operator involved is using DataStream or LLU then it may
be harder to resolve - DataStream might be particularly problematic

Sunil

Invisible Networks (a WISP).

Infrastructure and customers acquired by Mesh Broadband.

And continuing in the theme of things beginning with "I", Iridium.
(though not UK based).
Though in that case, it was more due to governmental desire to have
the use of it, as there is no easy substitute in many cases.

There have been a couple of major players go under in the US, but the
names escape me at present.

You can probably find them if you look for "chapter 11" or "bankrupt" on
a computer news site like www.theregister.co.uk or www.theinquirer.net
