You might consider netperf.

To get GbE speeds on a back-to-back connection, a TCP window of 128KB
should be sufficient.
You may want to check the CPU utilization of each core on each side
during the test. Also, check netstat stats and ethtool stats to look
for retransmissions and drops. Pull snapshots of those from before
and after the test(s) and run them through beforeafter from
ftp://ftp.cup.hp.com/dist/networking/tools to get the deltas:
