Bandwidth hogging...

I have a desktop PC connected to my DSL by wire through a Linksys WRT54G
router and I also access my DSL using my notebook wirelessly. My problem is
if I have something on my desktop PC busy downloading or uploading and I
boot my notebook my notebook often times will be unable to find my network.
In fact no networks show even though there are a couple of wireless ones
around my office complex. If I go and shutdown the program download or
uploading I can access the internet with my notebook, no problems finding
the network then.

Is there any way to fix this? Is there some way I can tell the router that
it shouldn't let the desktop using more than 50% of my total bandwidth so
that I will always have some for my notebook?

Thanks,

=(8)

Hi
You are mixing few issues.
The fact that your Desktop is busy Downloading/Uploading should not be a
factor in the Wireless Network per-se. I.e. Your Internet download on the
Laptop might be slow when the desktop is hogging the Internet bandwidth but
this has nothing to do with the Wireless Network not showing up and not be
able to connect wirelessly.
You have a Wireless connection problem. This might help in dealing with the
Wireless.
My New Wireless does not work - http://www.ezlan.net/wireless.html
Wireless, Basic Configuration - http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Config.html
Wireless Security - http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Security.html
Extending Distance - http://www.ezlan.net/Distance.html
In order to control the amount of Internet Bandwidth used by the desktop you
can try this, http://www.netlimiter.com

If what you say is the case home when I stop the desktop from
downloading/uploading the laptop is then able to find the network and
connect. All without a reboot?

Hi
Well that means that you Download Upload is so heavy that is destabilizing
the Router.
Most people are unaware that Entry Level Routers are actually small
computers and were not design for the type of load that people out on them
with applications like BT.
