Two machines running 98se. a fast ethernet switch connected to an ntl
broadband cable modem. an nic in each machine.

Which ever machine boots first sees the internet. The other doesn't.

And neither machine sees the other.

The rather lame bloke in the shop says he thinks its because both
machines are sharing an ip address allocated by the broadband
connection.

Is this likely? If so, what unique numbers can I allocate each machine
to make the damned thing work?

Help gratefully received....I'm going insane with this one.

x posted to general networking...

The answer is the same, regardless of how many newsgroups you post the
question to. You were answered in another newsgroup.

The lame bloke was actually partially right. Your ISP is only
granting you one IP address. It is not a "shared" IP address, but
only the first PC to log on to the ISP will get a valid address.

Your options are:

1: Add a 2nd NIC to one of the systems, and enable Internet
Connection Sharing to allow the other to access the Internet.

2: Call your ISP and pay for another IP address.

3: Scratch the switch and purchase a router, which would allow you to
continue working on a single IP address for both systems(best choice).

Good Luck...
