Backing up roaming profiles

I’m using Windows Server 2003. I have a number of roaming profiles stored on
the server that I wish to backup onto a separate hard drive; however, since
I’m logged on as administrator and the profiles are under the ownership of
the user, I have to transfer ownership to the administrator to be able to
transfer a profile folder to the hard disk. When I do this the profile no
longer works, i.e., when the user logs on they get a temporary default
profile, not the profile stored on the server. Even when I change ownership
back to the user, the profile still does not work. Is there a solution for
this?
