Dave,
I would think you are about to get several opinions now - there are
cheaper - there are more reliable - there are faster - there are better
download allowances - there are better customer service - etc,
for me, I've been using BT Basic for 18 months now and don't fault them.
There would appear to be less 'knocks' at BT in this newsgroup than many
other providers. IMHO

Almost certainly yes, but it depends on what you want out of an ISP.

Do they provide mail and news now, or does it cost extra ?

How much btw ?

This could well be because people who read this group are wise enough to do
their own research and end up NOT using BT ?

Martin

mistake would be putting it a bit strong, but many of the 100-odd
other competing ISPs could probably give you more for the same money
or charge you less for the same.

If you say which package you are considering, what you line speed can
be (www.bt.com/broadband) and describe your anticipated use of the
internet it may help people make useful suggestions.

Plenty of other folks appear to hit Enter and accept BT as a default
ISP, given their 1/3 market share, but they seldom stand up to
comparitive analysis.

A big change then from BT Internet in the dial-up days, they were ALWAYS
having problems.
Regards Mike.

Five weeks on I still have major problems with BT BB 2Mb/s - been fine
for many years, now a connection that has major packet loss within the
BB ISP side of the equation. Just got off the phone from BT Order
Management - had to tell them my phone number 4 times, my name twice,
the problem over and over again, and I have 5 reference numbers after
engineer home visits and exchange tests had been carried out - this
all proves it's not my system at fault.

I can repalce the system boot drive s/w froma known good image (ghost)
so I know it's not my system nor modem (I have two), and it all
changes with logon - get a good logon and it is perfect, spent another
3 days trying to get a good logon and failed.

They told me yet again (been told this bullshit 3 times by different
people) my PC had trojans because my upload is much larger tham my
smaller d/l - told them that is rubbish as I ..

Do not visit p2p sites nor d/l dodgy exe's - check my system
regularly, can place a good HD image back on in minutes, etc. My fw
tells me nothing is wrong, my connection shows a trickle of upload b/w
as per the data exchange that goes on. Took 10 minutes of listening to
bullshit before he spoke to his colleauge, who explained to him that
the data up/down shown on their system was reversed to how they
interpret it - the upload is not from me to anyone else, but their
server to me i.e d/l

Their support teams read a script, know sod all, are paid to bullshit
you away, their engineers do not understand IP's, packet loss,
traceroutes, etc.

Zen and others know what you are talking about - no wonder BT are
losing 100,000 customers or so a month (this is what I heard, it may
be in error but I would not be surprised).

I have given them 5 weeks after they pleaded with me to stay (asking
for a MAC code) - enoughs enough - sod them all.

Good point Martin, but I would have this newsgroup as being the 'big hitter'
broadband one in the UK, and if BT have a 1/3rd market share (even if its by
default), there's a good chance that a fair crack of these 'unwise'
broadbanders do read here and have the opportunity to knock BT.

Short of subscribing to a number of different ISPs to judge firsthand their
suitability, Dave is doing one of the next best things, and I hope he gets
lots more good advice.

I don't have any firsthand experience of other broadband ISPs, and am not a
'heavy' user, but was just giving Dave my 2p's worth.

It wasn't my intention to offend or draw criticism because of my choice
Regards
dfrog

it's ok until something goes wrong ... then you end up speaking to
some half-wit in India.

being a BT engineer, working on ADSL for years now, and spending 2 years at
college studying my Cisco exams I resent the fact that you say we don't
understand packet loss etc...get a life!
