A bit of a newbie when it comes to networking so here goes.......

Whilst at uni, i have my computer on a network controlled by a router and
everything works fine. Now i have brought my computer home and put it on the
network here, which is just run through a hub, with a windows xp machine
acting as DNS server etc. When i start up in safe mode on my machine
everything works fine but when i boot up normally it recieves a valid ip and
subnet but then is unable to connect to the network, i cant even ping
anything.

Im at a loss where i should go from here.

Any help would be most appreciated

Chris

Have you set a static gateway on your machine for the router at uni?

This would cause all traffic, even whilst at home, to be attemptedly (sp)
routed through it

Thannks for the response.

The gateway is set dynamically. Although all seems to be fine now. I think
the main problem was that i had zone alarm installed but had disabled it in
the startup so that there was one less thing to worry about. This seemed to
be confusing matters and by having it installed but not running it was
blocking all ports. Does this sound feasible?

I also found that the workgroup had miraculously changed (although didnt
think that should be an issue) and chose to manually set the ip address and
everything statically.

Thanks again,
Chris
