how to avoid image stretching with widescreen monitor

Being a hardcore computer games player, I'm still looking for a solution to
keep 4:3 resolutions when playing older games that don't support widescreen
resolutions. I rather prefer playing with black bars on either side than
having to look at a stretched image.
my systems specs:
monitor Samsung 226bw resolution 1680x1050
Geforce 8800GTS
Windows Vista

You might try posting to a more appropriate newsgroup, or contacting the
