You may have other wireless networks in your immediate area, other than your own. Especially if you live in an apartment building, dorm or even a densely built neighborhood.
Your files (and those of the other network owners) could be vulnerable, however.
1) Files and folders must be explicitly shared
2) A valid username and password are required, if you're using the NTFS file system. For the 98 system, you must specify a password for shared folder protection.
Your best defense is to enable WEP or WPA encryption on your wireless network and ensure that your router's firewall is turned on. Others will still be able to see your network, but will not be able to connect to it.
