I recently attempted to have broadband installed by plus net but it was
rejected because it says the line is inadequate.
BT websitre tells me I'm a long way from the exchange and that this may be a
problem.
Does anyone know if this is basically tough luck or is there something I can
do to pressurize BT into improving things

Thanks

Why not try this company (Tiscali), I got broadband from them, but could not
get broadband from a range of other companies as my line was too far from
the exchange. I was on BT Broadband beforehand, and believe it or not
Tiscali is so much faster. Tiscali are much cheaper than others too, they
have a package at only £15.99 a month, they have three packages:

Prices per month

£15.99 - 3x faster than dial-up

£19.99 - 5x faster

£24.99 - 10x faster

What I would suggest is that you go to the address listed below (takes you
directly to their services they provide), click on the middle box "Broadband
Internet Services", click on the 10x faster (sometimes the cheaper ones
aren't available on the line for some reason, so it's a good idea to check
the most expensive first then go to the next cheapest to check your line
etc, if price is an issue). This will then take you to a page where you
enter your telephone number to do the first line test.

When you put your number in and it tests the line, if it comes up with "You
may be able to get broadband but you lines is at least 2 miles ....." this
is what I got but they still gave me broadband. If you can't get broadband
from them you will get the message " Unfortunately you line has tested
negative...."

Good luck!

"Get lost" - thanks very much for being so polite!!

I've never had any problems with Tiscali, I've been on BT and I would say
they are the worst provider *I've* ever had, my Dad has AOL and that was bad
too for *him*.

So, what makes you think Tiscali is bad, have you been with them before and
had problems? I have had great service from them, free modem, fast download
(much faster than BT), it never disconnects like BT does, good support, and
they have just reduced their monthly fees, I don't see the other big guys
rushing to do that.

Each to their own, we all find something that suit's our own needs, maybe
Tiscali didn't suit you, it doesn't mean they won't suit other people.

Regards
Marie

Now, that's more contentious. Not necessarily best for everyone...doubt
they would be for me...

it is potentially "tough luck". Do you know othe rpeople around you
whose lines are supposed to be ok eg they have ADLS or the line
checker gives a +ve result for their phone numbers ?

trying a "manual order" with an ISP who knows what one is may get a
bit further as the first stage checker can be wrong.

What message do you get from bt.com/broadband for your number ?

Phil

Tiscali have the WORST repuation going, I would strongly advise anyone
thinking to shop elsewere. Plusnet do a similar package, and it's a £1
cheaper each month. Added to the bonus of not being with Tiscali,
that's quite a good reason....

Scott,
Try Vispa (www.vispa.com) they are fantastic. They are not as cheap as
Plusnet but they do know what they're doing & have a reputation for
being successful where others have failed (check adslguide.org). If
you are getting an amber for 512, then it is more than likely you'll
be ok if you are under the 60db limit. Does it show anything else
incompatible on the line?

I signed with Plusnet but despite asking for a manual order to bypass
the seemingly random automated BT order system they failed to do it &
I got nowhere. Vispa have been superb on the other hand.
Mark
