AV + Spam Software - any recommendation

Hi everyone,

I am looking to get some sort of anti virus software + spam killer to sit on
a server once my adsl connection is up. Does anyone have any recommendations
as to what to get which does'nt break the bank.

Mailwasher betas were pretty stable and supported multiple accounts. The
filtering is pretty good too... They`re probably still available if you
look, or i`ve got some somewhere - the email address in the header is
valid if you need it. If you add [newsgroup] to the subject there`s more
chance i`ll catch it amongst the 200+ spam mails I get per day :-}

Not too sure what to suggest over a virus killer, i`m on an old version
of AVP and very happy with it`s detection level compared to experience
with Nortons.

I`m not sure if you`re going to be using a USB modem, but even if you`re
using a combo router / modem, it might still be worth using a software
firewall (I use zonealarm) to allow you to get an idea what apps are
trying to get "out" of your machine.

You may also want to check out something like Spybot Search & Destroy
from http://security.kolla.de - it will detect most spyware and
components in your system that could allow you to be tracked. It has a
few added features that help keep your system locked down (under the
immunize option), and you can use a hosts file (under the tools tab)
which will block many malicious advertisers. I`d probably recommend
updating it every month or two, revisit the immunize option as more might
have appeared, then scan your machine.

No I used it for a while.... the instructions in the download section stated
that it was not time limited and it was fully supported.

I run a small network at home 4x win98 & 1 WinXP, E-Trust Anti Virus
wouldn't run on the 98 machine, It's not meant to, After all ..... it is
meant for servers....... but I thought I would try it......;-)

So, I wanted something standard to work on all machines. Now use AVG
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php No problems at all,
and the same version can be used on different platforms i.e win98 and XP,
The best bit it'e free...

I cannot fault it.

Their Firewall is good too and I have noticed a marked decrease in
nasties detected by AdAware since I installed it.

That`s a shame, i`m on 98se :-}

OK cheers - for now i`m using an ancient (but still worthy) version of
AVP by Kaspersky - it still gets updated exe`s too !

It`s just handy knowing it`s there if anyone I know needs one - i`ve got
CDR`s with security updates, virus sigs, trojan killers, "secure" email
apps etc etc. and they come in handy far too often ! (for other peoples`
machines, not my own)
