We have a wifi router in the house and one out in the barn. When I
come back in from the barn with the laptop, is there a software package
to get the wifi to automatically switch back to the house router and
the opposite??

Depends on the wireless card. Set the two access points/routers to different
channels with the same SSID, and a better wireless card should switch
automatically to the better signal. With different SSIDs, most wireless cards
will hang on to an existing signal until it is lost, even if it's horrible.

Windows XP does this automagically, when using the builtin wireless
config. At least, it does for me (switches between my actiontec 11b
and SMC 11g routers as I walk around the house).
