Automatically log on "root" on Coyote Linux

Hi NG!

I have set up a Coyote Linux router and it works fine. My only problem
is that I want the root-user to be automatically logged on. Sounds
strange, I know, but on the router it does not matter, because on the
one hand side, the router itself is just near me so noone else than me
can do something on it and even if some one gets to the router, he or
she could not do something very dangerous with it.

I already searched through Google Web and Google Groups and found some
useful hints for Mandrake and other distributions, but not for Coyote
Linux. I also donīt know whether Coyote Linux is based on another
distribution and if, on which one. I just could find out that I have to
bring my router to runlevel 4, but yet I do not know how to achive this.

May be some one could help me. I am not a Linux expert so please forgive
me if I have overseen something obviously. If someone can recommend me
another good Linux solution for a router that can handle PPPoE and runs
from a floppy disk or from CD, I am of course open to change to it.

Thanks in advance for any useful hint!

Best regards,

Michael

Does the router have an /etc/inittab? What boot loader does it use? Is
there an "init=" in the lilo.conf, menu.lst or other boot loader config
file?

Look at the file "/etc/inittab", and edit according to the instructions
you see in there regarding runlevels.

Yes, it has. This is the content:

::sysinit:/etc/rc.D/rc.S
::respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty1
tty2::respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty2
tty3::respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty3

I am not 100% aware of what these lines mean. AFAIK the first line
executes a script. I looked whatīs inside "/etc/rc.D/rc.S" and it
contains some instructions. The other three lines seem to open three
consoles or so.

Thereīs a file ""/etc/rc.D/rc.sysinit" that contains a lot of
interesting commands that are being executed at boot time.

I am not sure if it uses a boot loader at all since it runs from a
floppy disk.

I did not find any of these.

Best regards,

Michael
