How to I automatically assign a local IP to a computer?

Hi,

I have a LinkSys Wireless G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster,
WRT54GS, FIrmware version 4.70.6. I have a machine whose MAC address I
know and I want to always assign that machine the local IP
192.168.1.104. How do I do that?

I don't know about that Linksys device specifically, but usually you
would do what you want on the machine itself. There are various ways to
achieve this. Google for "assign a fixed ip address"

You don't. The stock Linksys firmware for the WRT54GS does not have a
"static DHCP", "static lease", "pre assigned DHCP", or whatever
feature. If you need this feature, I suggest you install an
alternative firmware, such as DD-WRT, which does have this feature:

Why so complicated?

A static IP address for the PC is assigned in Windows' own network
config. In Network -> Properties -> TCP/IP Properties, just set "Use
the following IP address" and be done with it. The DHCP server and
client don't enter into the picture at all.

All the machines on my home network have static IP addresses so I
always know which machine is generating what traffic.

Netgear offers an option to fix a particular MAC address to a particular IP
address, but that option doesn't seem to be present in the Linksys routers.

The default DHCP range is 50 addresses. You could assign that machine a
static IP address that it beyond 50, but still within the subnet of the
current routing.

Easy.
1. Because the original poster asked how to do it in the router.
2. Because I don't like reconfiguring my laptop every time I go to a
different wireless LAN. I like to leave it set to DCHP assigned IP
addresses. If I set it to static IP (as you suggest), I would need to
set it to DHCP when I go to a free hot spot etc.
3. Because users expect routers to have a "static lease" feature and
are rather suprised when it's not there.
4. Managing static IP's are a pain in the posterior.

That's fine for all your home machines, which don't go anywhere. If
your router had a "static lease" feature, you could just assign the
IP's in the router, and leave the computahs set to DHCP.

Incidentally, I used to use Netswitcher to juggle IP's because many of
my customers were using static IP's on their network.

Is this machine mobile? Can you set a static address? Can you set an
alternate ip address?

That's not the way I read it, since all he said was:

"I have a machine whose MAC address I know and I want to always

Well, I can see how you read it to mean something like how do I
configure the PC to always have the same IP address. However, in the
previous sentence, he also disclosed that he has:
I have a LinkSys Wireless G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster,
WRT54GS, FIrmware version 4.70.6.
which I read to mean that he wants to know how to configure the
wireless router, and not the PC, for a static lease. I'll stand on my
interpretation (and my answer).
