The easy method is to use TweakUI - http://www.microsoft.com/download

This for automatic domain logons. For peer to peer networks just
change the primary logon to windows logon and use a blank password.

Note. The tweakui method does have issues.

What issues does it have? I use it on three Win98SE machines and have never
seen any issues.
My Wife, Son and I use the TweakUI auto logon settings and I've not had a
problem that I can recall.
It clears up a lot of logon problems such as multiple profiles generated due
to spelling errors.
I can't begin to count the times I've had to clean from their machines, vast
quantities of profiles, duplicate folders etc. that are due to spelling
errors. There isn't any security measures that can be implemented on a 9x
machine that can't be circumvented by booting to DOS, or Safe mode and
deleting programs, registry entries etc., even BIOS passwords are useless as
every major vender publishes detail on how to reset them if forgotten.
I would not and do not use TweakUI to logon to systems that are designed to
be secure but Win9x series machines are not designed that way, so what's the
problem?

There have been a number of postings here wondering why it
(inexplicably) wasn't working.

The usual (but not the only) reason is if the machine (or sometimes
one of the others) on the network is sharing a printer.

The link below contains an interesting thread from the google archive
which contains a (sort of) solution to one of the issues as well as a
discussion generally.

I share a HP printer and Scanner and use the Scanner as a copier etc. etc.
TweakUI is not the problem nor is the 98 OS.
The author of that post is complaining about Windows ME.
If I owned ME, which I don't, I'd be bitching to.

Oh dear, another poster who doesn't have a problem so there isn't one
for everyone else too. And a top poster to boot. How typically
American.

If you're not happy with that one, try a more generic search like this
one

http://tinyurl.com/nmoe

You will find dozens of threads on tweakui working for some and not
for others and a spectrum of issues why it might be failing.

Oh dear a self righteous bottom poster from the UK, typical Brit.
If you read those posts you'll find a large number of TweakUI setting affect
other settings that one would not normally associate with a particular
setting.
The only other setting that conflicts with auto logon that I'm aware of is
"Clear last user at logon" setting on the Paranoia tab.
Many folks open TweakUI see that Paranoia tab and check everything on it
without regard to what it actually does.
http://www.woram.com/APPENDIX/APPENDIX.HTM
Here's a manual for those who may need one.

Read a few more of the threads.

It isn't just the DontDisplayLastUserName entry which stops it from
working. Apart from printers, there are reports of certain programs
running at startup which might also cause the autologon to fail.

Unless you are logging onto a domain, there is no need to use
something which is unreliable. For peer to peer, changing the primary
logon to windows logon and the use of a blank password is rock solid.
