A puzzling behavior,

I found out my DI-614+ router has set itself to the correct date & time. I
didn't provide any time server information.

How can this be?

Router probably downloaded the time and date from your PC. Pretty common
feature.

Actually, my DI774 router updates its clock from an NNTP server when it
connects to the ISP.

So his question would be - if he didnt set that up anywhere, where would it
be getting the timezone and ntp server information from ?

Probably a default setting in the device. Not uncommon.

Might be in the DHCP info.

SMC routers have a fixed list of NTP servers that they try to contact.
Mine wouldn't work through our company firewall, and I couldn't point it to
another server, but at home it works just fine. The logs tell me which one
it reached. Log stamps on a reboot prior to that are 00/00/00 00:00:00, so
it doesn't even bother to keep a clock across resets.

Oops! I e-mail this one yesterday to Hactar instead of the newgroups:
"You might be right! I see no other explanation."

In the mean time, I found out my router does use local DHCP because the time
is *exactly* the same as my computer clock. To be sure, I temporarily
changed the computer clock, reboot the router and it sets itself to the same
time. I also disabled the router local DHCP and connect to it with a fixed
IP address and the router clock didn't set.
