I've got this problem with an internal modem (Smartlink/Aztech
CNR-2800w, which occupies the AMR (Audio Modem Riser) slot inside the
machine) where I don't get any audio out of it. I mean, when connecting
to the ISP I should hear it "pick up the phone" and dial, which works
fine in Windows, but not in Linux.
I downloaded the Linux driver from the manufacturer's website, and apart
from this little problem it seems to work fine.
I've been messing around with AT-commands, hoping to find the right
command for this, but now I'm starting to think the problem lies
elsewhere, why?
Because, in Windows I started the terminal window ("terminal" as in
VT-100 or whatever, for communicating with the modem) and entered
"ATDT000" (which "picked up the phone" and dialled "000"). I could hear
the modem do this through the computer's speaker.
Then I did the exact same thing within Linux and I couldn't hear a
thing. So apparently this has nothing to do with AT-commands as I did
the same thing from the terminal windows without any special
initialization. I gather this means that the audio routing from the
modem to the speaker is either missing, or a volume setting is currently
set to minimum in Linux. I've tried setting every possible volume
control in the KDE audio mixer ("Kmix"?) without any luck. What else
could I try?
