Phillip,
Thanks for your previous advice. Could I impose on you once more? It seems
simple, however I cannot find a site
that directly compares the old single core 1meg cache Xeon
with the new dual core when used as an SQL server. The
same consultant that referred to the gigabit switch as a "backplane",
thought I was incorrect in my selection of new servers. He was "pushing" the
latest greatest (read:most expensive) servers. Sure that is a safe
statement, how could you go wrong? But... I never buy a new car ever. I let
the other guy take the hit for the "new car smell". I proposed getting
used servers, like I have in the past with great success . I find that going
a couple product cycles back, provides outstanding value. You get a server
that has proven itself reliability wise. In my experience every electronic
device I have EVER been in contact with has failed in the first year of use
if it was going to fail. All others seem to make it until I decide to toss
them.
I can buy a previously "high end" server Dell 3.4ghz dual Xeon 4gig ram, raid
etc for about one fifth the cost of just one of what the consultant
recommends. The server I want
falls well within the recommended current specs of the requirement of our
database front end provider, What are your thoughts on this matter? Thanks,
Adysthemic

Sorry, been gone for a week to MS's HQ in Redmond for the MVP Summit. Just got
back. Probably the same for a lot of the MVPs.

Cool. Same here, I have never owned a new car, ever. same Reason

Well I don't quite treat severs like cars. The Service Contract and Warrantee
is worth something too. Plus you can buy "new" without buying the "biggest &
fastest" and get a good price. But if you think what you buy will still be
dependable I guess that is alright. I still run some old servers here too along
with the new ones.
