Someone In Another Place drew my attention to this:
http://online.vodafone.co.uk/dispatc...ageID=PTC_0113

Given your mobile habits appear to be similar to mine, I thought you
might like to know.

Looks like my days of checking emails for a penny when my landline BB
stumbles will soon be over...

Even if your handset is locked to Vodafone you can put a an
ASDA PAYG SIM in and access the same network for 20p/MB. Pro rata.

Incidentally, why is your ADSL so unreliable?

I am using a Vodafone USB dongle; I believe Ivor does too. I suspect
this is locked to Voda though the SIM might be changeable.

I am disabled and have several extensions (and a DECT phone) wired into
a rather archaic system, with the router sited on an upstairs extension
(by which my partner has several non wireless- enabled computers etc.)
Filters and the router have failed in the past and the ADSL sometimes
breaks for very short periods for no discernible reason.

I suppose your dongle is 3G so maybe ASDA GPRS won't be fast enough?

Although ISPs suggest you do it that way, in actual fact
any ADSL installation with more than one filter is always a compromise.

A better way is to use a single filter* at the master socket where
the line enters the house, and your "archaic" wiring connected to that.
It does mean that all your extentions will be filterd so you won't be
able to plug the router into them, and a separate non filtered socket
will have to be wired unless you can have the router near the master socket.

*replacement filtered faceplates are availible for the NTE5 master socket
which maks a neater job.

Thanks. I knew this but accept a flaky ASDL is the price I'm paying for
the convenience of phones everywhere and a house that does not look like
spaghetti junction.

The old AppleMac and HUGE HP printer are upstairs and ought to stay
there. Arranging unfiltered lines for them will be very awkward if I
change the current arrangement.

I think I'll get high-speed stand alone cable broadband eventually.
Virgin have cabled my street (but seem to charge more if you don't buy a
'bundle'. I don't have or watch TV and might just want to keep a BT
landline.)

Your router is the only item that needs an unfiltered phone line.
Please explain why you think anything else does.

I realise that; it's upstairs, at the back of the house, connected to
the printer and three old computers via ethernet cables. The master
socket is unsurprisingly by the front door.

This seems strange to me -
"Should you exceed this limit, we may ask you to moderate
your usage, we may charge you for the extra usage at your
standard rate or we may stop your access to the service."

Hmmm? Have they perhaps missed out on an option?

We may not notice.

I am on a "limited" wired broadband (1 month contract) which
suited me at the time, but limit is not enforced.
Limit is 10G a month - if I was to guess I would say I am
doubling it at least from various checks that I have done.
I watch/listen to a fair amount of bbc iplayer.

Unfortunately the routers counters wrap at 4G so I can't
just check so easily right now

Hmm. I read this as applying to internet access from a phone rather than
the dongle, however I'm probably wrong, I usually am ;-)

I can't see any link to the above page from the login page of my account,
but I'll ask them in the local Voda shop if they know anything (not
holding breath..)

Bad form replying to myself but I just checked this page and it still says
£15 for 1GB:

http://online.vodafone.co.uk/dispatc...pageID=MB_0012

or http://tinyurl.com/vodapayg if it wraps :-)
