Attenuation down from 57 to 15 ... WHY?

I'm 5 km from the exchange - and the line loss has always been, as
expected, rather high.

I logged into the Netgear DG834PN router this morning
(first time for months) and found this surprising figure.

Any ideas?

Noise Margin is 19.

Bogus reading. Many routers give inaccurate readings, especially when the
readings go outside their operating parameters. If the noise margin drops to
2 or 3, you sometimes get readings like -467000300 etc.

That's what I suspected. I have just upgraded the firmware
from 1.03.18 ... 6 Jan 06
to 1.03.25 ... 31 May 06
and it's now back to showing 57.
Disappointing in a way!
I was hoping there had been a miracle.
