How to attach external antenna to Linksys boxes?

I notice that most Linksys wireless base-stations (e.g. access-points,
routers, whatever)
allow one to unscrew the two little flip-up antennas. Is this how one is
supposed to
then attach a possible EXTERNAL antenna?

If so, should I build a 'splitter cable' and attach it to both connectors?
And, where do I purchase connector(s) that will screw onto this antenna
connector?
And, what specs to I want for the 'inter-connection' cable running from the
Linksys
out to my omni-directional 10-db antenna? (I'm basically trying to build a
'hotspot'...i.e. I want to maximize the range out to whatever client-PCs are
out there
that want to connect to this Linksys base-station. Up to 32 of them, at
least.)

TIA...

Dave

Long cables are problematic. You need very low loss cable, or you will eat
up the gain that your antenna provides. You might want to locate the WAP
outdoors instead, and run ethernet cable to it.

Craig Bartell has a zipped pdf file with lots of data about his 7km link.
Craig uses outdoor WAP, with ethernet running to it.

David Taylor has pictures and narrative of his two hop link.
David has an indoor WAP, and RF cable running to it.
