Asus WL500G Premium TFTP problem

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10, my Wireless is disabled.

Trying to use TFTP to upgrade to DD-WRT on my asus WL500-GP I keep
getting "file transfer time out" or something like that. I've never
had this problem with Linksys routers, hoping someone can tell me what
im doing wrong before i throw it out a window.

Router is in update mode when I type the following:
(after waiting a long time for DHCP to issue an ip, static didn't
help)

tftp 192.168.1.1
mode binary
put wl500g-clear-nvram.trx


after that the file transfer times out.

Any help will be appreciated.
