Every motherboard is broadband ready - in theory! Does it have either a PCI
slot or USB socket free? Even better, doesnt this model of mobo have an
onboard 10-100 Ethernet adaptor?

It has two.

If it`s anything like the A7N266-VM-SE I put together on Thursday last
week, the drivers supplied fail to get the LAN port working on a 98SE
install. The drivers from their site are better apparently.

I had a spare card though, problem solved :-p

If you buy a router / modem you simply plug a network cable between the
two, edit the username and password via a web-page interface, and away
you go.

If you`re going for adsl (a different technology to cable), you will need
a modem somewhere along the line. You may be sent one by the ISP you sign
up with, but the odds are it will be a USB modem. These work, but not
brilliantly, depending on a couple of things, like processor speed of
your machine, and the chipset built into the motherboard. You may, of
course, have no problems at all :-}

You can buy adsl modems as either external devices or PCI cards (although
I would recommend a router / modem combo instead if for nothing else, the
added security they provide) - a router will typically "hide" any PCs
plugged into it unless told not to by allocating a different IP address
that only the router knows about - hackers won`t be able to get to your
hardware direct.

It`s not an old motherboard, so i`m sure it will have USB ports. I can`t
think of a single motherboard that hasn`t for 5+ years :-p

If you`re going for cable, the odds are the cable co. will provide the
modem.

I think the other replies slightly misunderstood the question - of course
the board can be used with broadband, but it does not have the equipment
onboard to act as either an ADSL or a cable modem - these are external
devices! I have never heard of any motherboards having ADSL or cable modems
built-in.

The short answer is no. It has two onboard 10/100 ethernet ports
and plenty of USB ports. To have it work with broadband, you will
need either a USB ADSL modem or an adsl modem with an ethernet port
(best to get a modem/router with a few ports e.g EN5861 so you can add
additional machines). The advantage of the modem/router with
multiple ports is that you can attach each machine to the modem/router
and operate them independently rather than run something like Internet
Connection Service (ICS) under Windows.

Although this board has a 3com ethernet port and an Nvidia one if it is the
deluxe version, so a single usb or ethernet connected adsl modem will allow
ics to connect a further machine without the need for a router.........

If you get Cable you have built in Ethernet so it will plug straight in to
the ethernet cable that the Cable Company provides and will work fine.

For ADSL see other posts in this thread.
