asking for password for printers

I'm setting up a printer on our new Server 2K3 computer,
and trying to get all the other machines to print to it.
When we install the printer on an XP machine, I have to
enter in our admin name and password, and then it
installs fine. But for 98 machines, it ONLY asks for a
password, and the admin pass is not working. Do I need
to set up a blank userID on the 2K3 machine? How do I do
that?

Hi,

Is this domain environment or standalone? If it is domain (active directory)
did you install Active Directory Client on Windows 98? You can find AD
Client on Windows 2000 CD.

I am completley new to Windows Server, so bear with me if
I sound like an idiot...

I have not figured out how to manage Active Directory
Client, and I do not know why I may need to. If it is
standalone, how do I get past the password issue?

Sorry, Active Directory Client (peace of software) was currently my only
idea.

Let me take a stab at it:

Sounds to me that you are in a Workgroup environment and thus need to create
a user on the server with the same userID and password like the one that is
currently logged into the W98 machine(s). Alternatively you could enable the
guest account on the server.

Cheers

You probably are getting the \\servername\IPC$ password prompt. You need to
create an account on the Windows 2003 Server that matches the logon name and
password that is used to logon to the Windows 98 computer for Microsoft
networking. You also could enable the guest account on the Windows 2003
Server but ONLY if all users are totally trusted and you have a firewall to
protect you from the internet.. The link belw should explain more. ---
