ASDL Modem/Router Advice (and a print server as well??)

Hi All,

My PC is about to breed and so I have decided to install a wireless
network at home. I pretty much understand what needs to happen and have
spent this afternoon trying to work out the best kit I can buy for my
purposes. I'd appreciate any advice, web pages or FAQs if they are
available.

I need to network 2 PCs and Printer with ASDL broadband. PC1 (the new
one) will be in the same room as the wireless router and so I will cable
this direct. PC2 will be in another room, on the same floor about 10m away.

Ideally I'd like to network a USB printer if I can find a router with a
USB print server on (which I haven't found so far wireless wise) - if
not I'll leave that for now and get a print server later.

I will also need to VPN into work from PC1 - admit to be a little
confused if there are special considerations that need to be thought
about here.

Any guidance would be fantastic.

My set-up is as follows:

PC1 hard wired via LAN card to Netgear DG834 Wireless ADSL
Modem/Router.
Laptop wireless connection to router.

Printer and ADSL shared via router. Does that help?

Hi Tony, thanks for this. It does help - but presumably your printer has
a network port. My printer is only USB and so I'm knackered without a
USB print server. (annoyed really with my lack of foresight - should
have thought of this 2 months ago when I bought the printer - DOH!!!)

Steve, my printer has a USB port - I just set up the printer as a
shared resource across our home network.

Ah I see what you mean - I really want to be able to print from either
networked PC direct to the printer - without the need for the PC
physically attached to the printer to be switched on. But having said
all that - it is still a solution that would work for me 80% of the time
so I think this is what I'll do.

ebuyer do a combined ADSL modem/wireless router with a USB print
server for just over 54 quid. I've just acquired one to install
for some friends but have not yet done so, so I don't have any
info yet on reliability/useability. It's got VPN support as well
which you said you required, although on this I confess
total ignorance.

Following up on my own post in case it is of interest to anyone:
I've now installed this system and can confirm it does everything
it says on the tin. It was straightforward to set up for wired
and wireless use and the USB print server was also very simple.

Although there's what appears to be a daunting amount of documentation
in the manual on the CD (140 pages worth) you don't need any of it
to do what most people will want for a simple home setup. It was
quicker and simpler to setup than the 3com Wireless Access Point I
bought recently, which is saying something since it has a lot
more functionality. And if you want things like having the syslogs
emailed to you elsewhere or time-based filtering rules, it's
all available.

OOI, what make or model, or product code, please ? Just in case someone
else is after doing something similar (I have no plans for wireless here
except perhaps to monitor to see if someone nearby is 'sniffing' to find
an open access facility... I may put a WAP somewhere like the attic...

OT: have you been at ULCC for a long time ? I used to go there to JANET
meetings in the late 80s, and felt sure you were among the people at the

It's a Safecom modem/router, SWBRU-54108 or ebuyer quick-find 64620.

I'll have been here 21 years this coming January, so I guess that counts
as a long time. I've never worked in the NOC but was originally part
of the network development group when that was a separate team. You
might have come across my name through that, particularly if you dealt
with VAX/VMS networking or subscribed to the info-vax list.
