Hello all,

I am desperately trying to install ASDL on Mandrake 9.2 but I can't
seem to get through it. I have a USB modem/router Netopia Cayman 3300
and I've been trying to look up the Internet to snatch the linux
drivers but couldn't find any (even on Netopia's official website).
Weird, because the Netopia's
modems are pretty popular in ASDL world.

I have also tried to use the Mandrake Internet Connection Wizard but
no can do, the connection won't go through. Any ideas ?

Please help me out, I'm a bit tired of using a 56.6k modem on Linux !
;-)

Best,

-J

Your problem may be that you are using USB. I have just successfully
connected to ADSL with a NetComm modem. It has both USB and Ethernet
connectors, and it is specified via Ethernet only.

If it is an external modem, it shouldn't need drivers. These are already in
your kernel. I used the Network configurator with DrakeConf. Connection
between the computer and the modem are DHCP, and between the modem and the
outside world are PPPOE, which was already installed in the modem.
DrakConf called for the DHCP package, and it just worked. The only problem
I had was with a secondhand network card, which was recognized as such, but
the system froze while configuring. That may have been coincidence. The
"driver" for the card I bought was a text file telling me how to install the
kernel modules.

We all rely, as you did, on the idea that anything widely used must be
supported. It doesn't necessarily follow. There are lists of supported
hardware on the Web. For example, Canon scanners are the most common model
sold here, but the model I bough is totally unsupported by Sane, and only
some others are, because Canon doesn't make the details available. That
shouldn't apply to an external modem however.

HTH,

Doug.

Hey Fellows
I jumped in late on ths but listen..I found an old Mandrake 7 disk that
I got with a Linuzx mag. I installed it on my laptop. I have a Linksys
llb PCMCIA wifi card on it. (Was using Microsoft Wireless Broadband_
Also using MN 500 Base station router.
Question
Does Mandrake 7 have the neccesary 'equipment' to setup a network? I do
have That Drakconf program, and I perused it. Is there anything I can
download to upgrade this w/o spending 100s of dollars(outa work right
now..company went to Korea)
Any ideas..(on my Linux situation)

This has nothing to do with the original thread, but why in the world do
you not get a much later version of mandrake. Max cost about $10 from a
place like cheapbytes. Wifi essentially did not exist when Mandrake 7 came
out. Get a copy of Mandrake 10.0 or 10.1 which have much broader wifi
support. It is possible you will have to use ndiswrapper or the $20
Linuxant drivers.
But to directly answer your question, yes Mandrake 7 has the necessaries to
set up a network-- wire based ethernet has been supported well since long
before Mandrake even existed.
