What tool can I use to get the IP-Mac pair mappings on my network and
how does it work? Thanks, Calin

just use the 'arp' command will get you a decent amount of info. Failing
that try playing around with arp swiss army knife. http://www.arp-sk.org/

If you want info on what ARP is and how it works your best bet is probably

course you can also have a look at the RFC aswell,

1) Do a broadcast ping, so all responding systems will get into your arp
cache

2) arp -n to get the list.

Have a look at `arpwatch' and `arpsnmp':
