Hello,
I would like to set up a static default path from my Linux machine
through a windows proxy as follows:
DSL
|
Windows proxy 172.0.0.1
|
Linux 172.0.0.2
I realize the ideal situation is to switch the boxes and use the linux
for the proxy, but for now I'd just like to ping and telnet from the
Linux box to the outside world. There are 2 NICs in the windows box,
one to the ISP, the other to the linux box. Any help would be much
appreciated.

Thanks

If it's just a proxy (you don't say what for) it'll only work as a proxy
for that service. If it's an HTTP proxy for instance you will need to
configure your web browser to use it. Nothing else will work through it.

If it's acutally a router you'll need to set the default gateway on the
Linux box to 172.0.0.1. Beyond that, getting a Windows machine to work
as a router and perform NAT (if that's required) is off topic, ask in a
Windows group. (Hint - ICS).

Is that really the right address? ARIN doesn't know about 172.0.0.0. The
RFC 1918 private space in that vicinity is 172.16.0.0-172.31.255.255.

You are unlikely to have a lot of joy trying to telnet to the outside
world BTW. No-one in their right mind will permit telnet over the
Internet these days. If you need to log on to machines over the Internet
you need ssh. Which you probably already have.

Regards, Ian

Windows post Win98 has a thing called internet connection sharing.

You could probably use that.

Heres the instructions on the XP version

Thanks very much Ian for setting me back on track. I was thinking I
could just set a default address on the linux side. Of course the
windows box isn't a router, only an HTTP proxy. Other points are well
taken also.
I'll check out ICS that you and Creideiki (thanks for the URL) have
suggested before I switch boxes.
Thanks again,
jim
