Hi,

I have been approached by Talk Talk offering me Broadband and phone
for £20.99 per month, they claim to be able to migrate my service
without the use of a MAC. Is this possible?

Thanks.

It is possible, but would take longer then getting a MAC code. First
you would have to tell your current ISP to end you service, wait until
that has been taken off, then sign up with TalkTalk and then they
would spend upto another 10 days getting you connected. With the MAC
code the downtime would be something like 1-3 hours.
I agree with Peter, cost should not be the only thing. Personally I
would not go to anyone who is going to take over the line, so that you
pay line rental to TalkTalk instead of BT. In the event of a fault on
your voice service it just added hassle with other providers, as it
costs them to have BT sent out an engineer. BT do seem to be better at
doing this. Secondly TalkTalk is not really the cheapest. O2 has a
decent service, and if you are a mobile customer with them then you
have get 8mb Broadband for just under £8, with freephone UK support.

Not a company with which to get involved unless you want to risk wrong
demands and severe harassment from debt collectors. It matters not
whether you are in the right and whether you try and explain by letter
for the personal attention of the chief executive or whatever.
I ended up asking them to sue me but of course just received more
harassment.
I may be in a minority but I am certainly not alone. Not worth the risk.

Yes its completely possible if TalkTalk have a LLU exchange in your area;
they jumper your entire line onto their kit which doesn't require any MAC
code.
Of course, they might not have explained the need to correctly cancel your
other arrangements (phone and broadband) or you end up paying two providers,
nor will they have necessarily mentioned that quite a lot of ISPs now charge
a termination fee if the line is ceased (rather than migrated).

Others have discussed TalkTalk's service quality (or lack thereof).

Yep, they did this with me. Which was quite handy at the time as the
ISP I was with were being difficult about issuing the MAC.

For me the service has been fine (for the money) but they have a
terrible reputation if you DO have any problems.

Also had a cold call recently, for phone service.

1st time in a while a company thought they might get business by brow
beating me and arguing on the phone, then trying to escalate to a
"manager" to repeat the exercise......

they did manage to convince me never to deal with them in future.

Thanks for all the replies, Im not going to migrate to TT but just
wondered about the technical aspects i.e. no MAC.

For the record they are also door knocking around the Brighton area (a
friend of mine had a visit). Also I have had calls from them, CLI
presented was 0113-390 2000 and 0113-390 2102.

Friends of mine signed up Nov last year. Phone OK but still
no internet connection. They send you a disc which doesn't
work. You then call support and it takes 2 hours + (if you
can understand the dialect) to go through their stepped
procedure. When it is apparent that the problem is up the
line they then advise you to call back in 3 days. 4 times
this procedure has been endured when it is patently obvious
that its DNS problem with their server. (The ADSL is
synch'ed OK) 10+ Hours have been spent without resolution
and still no help whatsoever. This is the reason to RUN AWAY.
