Hi,

is it possible to apply changes to DNS (bind) with a minimum of
interruption?

We currently restart the service, which in turn reloads the configuration
file.

A colleague smiled at it and told me that in Windows such changes can be
applied without restart and without interruption.

Regards

Try "rndc reload", which claims to "Reload configuration file and
zones". There are several variations on this theme, including the ability
just to add new zones, or to reload only a single zone.

Why do you restart the service?

What does this have to do with which operating system you are using?

AFAIK this results in an interruption of about 30 sec.

Are you restarting named or rebooting the computer?

A name server that is primary for a large number of zones (or a number
of large zones) can take quite awhile to start up depending on how the
server software is designed. It frequently requires reading in each
zone's file, parsing those files, and in some cases verifying that the
zones are still current with other servers.

Mate,

How many zones you have on your DNS?
Try restart bind with 20k entries, just for tests,
you will find out that it will take same time.

On my box it can take over 2 min to have server back fully
operational.

Not every body have <10 zones on the box.

Kind regards,
Mateusz

We operate with more than 2000 zone files.

Right, assuming everything else is 100% reliable during this time
interval. It's always a good idea to reduce the interval during which
everything has to be perfect.
