Application Relay Server

Hey guys,

I am a programmer looking to learn more about Networking.
Can someone please explain me what an application relay server is, and how
does it work and do what it does?

I would really appreciate it.

It would be great too if someone could point me in the right direction to
some tutorials on this matter.
