Just started playing with wifi. I have a notebook with a G card but I
don't have desktop or any other system that can handle the other end.
I'm on alternate energy (ie solar and wind) and don't want to use the
power for a system that is simply handling the dialup, etc. Is there
any hardware that can handle the dialup connection as well as the AP
all-in-one?

Orinoco RG-1000 Wireless Residential Gateway - acts as either a WAP
for a LAN or as a Gateway to a dial-up connection via built-in V.90
modem. Also badged as Compaq WL310 Wireless Home Office Gateway or
Avaya RG-2 Wireless Residential Gateway, and probably several
others.

The only current product I know of that combines an 802.11g AP/router
with a modem is Apple's AirPort Extreme Base Station. USR makes an
802.11b AP/router (the USR8022) with a RS-232 serial port for connection
to an external modem.
