Hi all,

I'm trying to connect two offices in two different buildings using a
wireless LAN.

I bought 2 AP: one is a DLink DWL-2000AP and the other is a DWL-900AP+, they
are different because they were the only ones available and I'm quite in a
hurry :-( I even bought a wireless adapter to be used on a laptop and do
some tests.

I've set up the 2000AP as an AP and the 900AP+ as a wireless client. They
see each other and the wireless pcmcia card can see them both too.

On the network behind the 2000AP (the real AP) the pc's can see both the AP
but can't connect to the other network segment; while on the network
connected to the 900AP+ (the wireless client AP) i can connect to the 900AP+
only (obviously the other network segment is disconnected too).

I think the main problem is that the "AP wireless client" (900AP+) is not
working as a bridge. I've no idea on ho to do this. I've read many messages
suggesting to use one AP in client mode, but no further explainations.

Thanks for your advices,

Valerio

Valerio, use 2 DWL-900+AP's and set them up in BRIDGE MODE which is an
option in the configuration...

It's in the web pages used to do the configuration. Click on the
Advanced tab then click the Mode button on the left side of the page.
Then click on the Wireless Bridge button and enter the MAC address of
the other unit and click the Apply button. You do this for both units,
giving each one the other one's MAC address. The web page for this is
the same on each one.

But, at least according to the D-Link manuals, the bridge mode will only
work between two of the same kind of device. In other words you need two
900AP+ or two 2000AP for this to work. But since you already have one of
each it certainly would not hurt to give it a try anyway. If it really
does work I would like to know, I have a few 900AP+ in service now.

If you're using WEP those settings must also be the same and of course so
must the key being used on each end. You may also need to set the 2000AP's
speed to 11mbps (as opposed to auto) or some other compatible speed and
generally hack your way through various combinations of things like this
to see if anything works. All these items are on the web page you get by
clicking the Performance button just below the Mode button on the Advanced
web page. I would also start by trying it without WEP, then if that works
and you wanted to use WEP, then turn it on and see if it still works.

Yes, both units must be configured as wireless bridges. I did this and I was
able to connect two lans. Be aware that the MAC address to be entered is the
ETHERNET MAC address of the other unit and NOT the Wireless MAC address. At
first I entered the latter and it did not work!
