A friend wants to upgrade from her AOL/BT Voyager 190 to a wireless one.
Can I use any wireless router with AOL broadband? If so what are the
settings - AOL help just says download their set-up wizard when referring to
a Netgear router. ...and do I really have to use AOL's browser to get on
line?

Any router will work with any ISP, since by and large what's at the
other end of the line is an Openstream DSLAM.

Most ISPs give you a suite of settings that will work.

If not, ask again.

I can answer the second question: no, you don't have to use any of AOL's
software. I have an elderly friend who's been with AOL for years and has
all their junk installed on his desktop PC, which I've had to fix
multiple times. When he bought a laptop, I didn't install any of the AOL
programs and it works fine. In fact he likes it so much better without
all the hoopla of "signing in" that he now wants his PC set up the same
way.

In his case, the router was already set up, so I just had to connect the
laptop to the network. But there's an AOL forum on thinkbroadband.com
that should help with the settings: put "AOL router" into the Search and
some useful posts should come up. Good luck!

AOL support is not worth having anyway.

Thanks for all your replies. I last 'played' with AOL about 5 years ago when
IIRC they had an unusual MTU length and it only worked with their browser -
hence the questions.

I'm not unfamiliar with ADSL and broadband - in fact I trialled (free of
charge) Telewest's early venture into ADSL in 1998/99(?) - took two BT
engineers (in suits) and two Telewest engineers to install a router that was
about 24" wide, 15" deep and 4" tall and consumed about 100W. It really
hurt when it was recovered 12 months later and I went back to 64K dialup!!
